We discovered that Paraguay has way more to offer than we initially thought for such a small country which is just over 150,000 sq mi, being smaller than California!

Even though Paraguay is landlocked, don't be fooled into thinking you can't enjoy amazing beaches. Thanks to the Paraná River, the second longest river in South America, you can still hit the beach!

The country is a mix of bustling cities, laid-back towns, and unique, untouched nature. So, whatever you're into, Paraguay's got something for everyone!

An interesting point to note. Don't assume, like we did, that your Spanish will be enough to take you around this country.

Almost half of its population can speak the countries both official languages (Spanish and Guarani) with still a considerable part of of the population (30%) only speaking Guarani.

Our Top 5 must visit places in Paraguay :

1 - San Bernardino -

We loved this place!

San Bernandino
San Bernandino

Just a short drive from Asuncion (about 30 miles), you'll come across San Bernardino, or "San Ber" as the locals like to call it.

It's the perfect place to soak up the unique blend of charming Paraguay, with its lively music and tasty food, mixed with a touch of European flair thanks to the German settlers who arrived here in the 19th century.

If it weren't for the Paraguayan polka and other Latin tunes playing from the speakers, you might easily think you're back in Bavaria while enjoying a pint of German beer surrounded by German speakers.

Our tip: Visit anytime from December to March.

San Ber is at its best during the Summer Holiday, with bustling streets and an awesome nightlife!

2 - Encarnacion

Encarnacion is the third largest city in Paraguay, so it has all the services you'd expect from a city this size. But it still keeps that easy, walkable vibe, with lots of lively bars and a friendly atmosphere.

As we were crossing into Paraguay from Posadas, just across the river from Encarnacion, we have heard all about its great reputation among Argentinians. They love crossing the border to enjoy the city's lively scene. Especially during the summer holidays, Encarnacion really shines as the "Capital of the Summer," with its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife.

Since Argentinians are fans, we figured Encarnacion would make our Top 5, and it totally lived up to the hype!

After taking care of the usual travel stuff like exchanging money and getting a SIM card, we strolled along the promenade and chilled out with some food at one of Encarnacion's many great spots.

3 - El Chaco

In at number 3 on our top 5 must visit places paces in Paraguay is The Chaco! What a forest this is!

The Paraguayan side of the Gran Chaco makes up more than half of the total Paraguayan's land area, but only about 2% of the country's population lives there.

Its flora and fauna are a global treasure. When we visited and saw how vast this place is, the second-biggest forest in South America, it was hard to wrap our heads around the fact that it’s facing massive deforestation. They say that by 2030, 50% of the Gran Chaco could be deforested.

That's why visiting one of the conservation centers was so uplifting.

We chatted with the workers, who were super passionate about the work they're doing there, and we only hope that more funds are allocated to these centers, as they are doing invaluable work for all of us!

4 - Villa Florida & Playa Paraiso

From the moment we got here, the people made us feel right at home. Villa Florida has that small-town charm, and with just over 3,000 people, it felt like joining a big friendly family.

The geography of Villa Florida is pretty unique. Just 100 miles from Asuncion, it sits on a wide savannah near the Tebicuary River, making it a hot spot for eco-tourism.

The best part about Villa Florida? Definitely its white sand and the huge river beach.

If you visit on summer weekends, you'll not only get to enjoy the stunning beach but also catch some local music and drinks under the trees.

We had a blast and felt like true locals!

5 - Asuncion

Asuncion is a bustling and hectic city, but if you're like us and prefer to dodge the crowds in big cities, there's still something for you in Asuncion.

Villa Morra is a fancy commercial and residential neighborhood. We felt super comfortable and safe here, so we recommend it for a relaxing stroll and a stop at one of its cafes. Villa Morra stands out in Asuncion's booming market with its many shopping malls, commercial spots, eateries, and hotels.

Paseo Carmelitas is one of the most luxurious and popular areas located on Avenida España, packed with restaurants, breweries, and karaoke bars.

If you're looking to escape the frequent 40°C heat, do what we did and head to the modern Sol shopping center. If shopping is your thing, you'll find all the main high-street brands here. And if you're after a cool spot for a drink and a snack, check out the diverse options in this shopping center. The vibe is relaxed, youthful, and modern, similar to what you'd find in Europe.

Our tip: Unless you're Lewis Hamilton, driving into the city might not be the best idea. Even if you manage to return with your car intact, your stress levels might hit the roof.

The easiest way to get around Asuncion is by Uber. It works perfectly well here and is pretty affordable.

Discover the Paraguayan Paradises!

This small country really has everything you could want—amazing beaches, stunning wildlife, lush forests, and incredible sunset views by the river. You should definitely check it out!
